Last weekend’s adventurous crew on the Shoreditch Street Art Photography Workshop Challenge included Will Edgecombe, an incredible photographer who brought along a proper tilt shift lens and a determination to try photographing street art for the first time.

The party fun tonight certainly makes up in quality what it lacks in quantity. The only event on the Shoreditch Street Art Tours calendar tonight is Cranio’s special one off one night only show at Fun Factory.
Cranio, beloved Brazil street artist has been hectically busy in London over the past few weeks with multiple new pieces up on Shoreditch Walls not to mention elsewhere. He has also been working hard on fresh studio paintings and tonight will be the only time a cluster of large and very special hand finished prints will be seen all together by the public.
Maybe HIN will be around to speculate on why the flipped finger, the bomb belt and the genitalia on the Cranio/HIN collab mural on Grimsby St weren’t buffed but his paste up heads were! (we think we can guess the answer)

Fresh art from the studio of French stencilist Tian has appeared on the streets of London. Tian’s work first came to our attention as one of the stand out “turn up and spray” un-invited artists at Banksy’s Cans Festival in 2008. We met when Tian came on his regular visits to London and in 2010 I wrote a profile of this artist which appeared in Issue 13 of Very Nearly Almost street art zine.
Tian enjoys working with figures, notably boxers and actresses and is also a keen fan of Japanese Shungas which are clearly an influence on some of the erotically charged work he has put up in Shoreditch. We photographed 19 separate new pieces of work this afternoon, Tian has clearly been very very busy!
Blog posts on Jonesy on 2 consecutive days may pose the appearance of being slightly obsessed, but on the Shoreditch Street Art Tour today we were greatly excited by the discovery of new work by Jonesy. These were painted on heavy paper and at the time we found them, completely soaked through with rain. As usual the art is issue based with a piece commenting on fracking for gas and a piece about the industrial production of farmed fish “Salmon Pink No GM”.
We almost always find some new art on these tours (this is NOT a contractual promise!) and this unique original work by Jonesy is stunning! They also photographed beautifully against the colourful patina of tags, marks and other street art.

One artist who consistently astonishes visitors on the Shoreditch Street Art Tours is Jonesy. My friend RJ of Vandalog.com, the leading street art news and opinion blog bar none, invited me to write a couple of guest posts during August for his blog so I am delighted to sing the praises of the street artist known as Jonesy.

After writing and sending off the words and pics to RJ, we ran a Street Art Photography Workshop in Hackney Wick last weekend and strolling back to the skatepark via the canal after the guests had dispersed I found another Jonesy artwork on the canal. Nothing beats the joy of finding a new piece of street art and the feeling is doubled when it’s a Jonesy.

At an earlier Street Art Photography Workshop one excellent suggestion from our friend Hooked Blog was – set a challenge! So at the Hackney Wicked Street Art Photography Workshop last weekend, 30 or so participants were handed a sheet of paper with a set of photographic challenges which would reinforce some of the suggestions we had made during the workshop:
We are delighted to share with you the response emailed to us by Mitch Hicks who responded to our tips, hints and exhortations with the following thoughts regarding each of the pictures he has selected and we thank Mitch for his permission to publish these words and images:
MH: The first snap being Context was a tough one to choose. I went for the graffiti wall that you spent a lot of time explaining how graffiti writers differ from street artist. I like the way I caught movement from you to add to the still wall and a glimpse that this was taken by the canal on a tow path. There was a touch of humour in your stance and the message above your head saying “Take me out”.. On the down side I did not get the 2013 in!
MH: The second snap Abstract Detail just had to be a Six One Six, The snap itself is not that abstract but the fact that the settee was maybe one of the most photographed pieces over the weekend and just fitted into that space by the pub made it an easy target for a detailed abstract of a Six One Six pattern with great colours.
MH: The third snap is a real gem People Interaction I had quite a few good ones to select from but this one with the hand coming from the gate and that man carrying the Hackney Wick local newspaper was made even better by the grills making his face a mystery! Even in the background there were snappers looking for their next capture! The gate just works so well next to that lady! I also like the fact that the man is wearing a bowler hat and he could be taking or giving her that map.
MH: Reflection This snap could well fit into a few of your six challenges. The reflection of the boat is not really the main course in this meal. I have caught the image of the Paul Insect sticker in the camera lens of the lady taking her shot! In a way I’m really reflecting on how the others are doing on this tour.
MH: Distorting Perspective Maybe my favourite sculptures in London. This was taken on timer with the camera on the ground! Works very well with the boaters on a higher level. The sculpture looks life size in this image me thinks!
SSAT: in our earlier blog post about our the day trip out to present the Street Art Photography Workshop to the Hackney Wicked Art Festival, there is a shot of the lengths Mitch went to take this glorious photograph.
MH: [next pic] Shows that you might have a photo artist on tour, she was getting down low but I got down even lower!!
MH Sticker Again lots of nice ones took my eye on the day, but the clever way Cept placed the sticker on the large poster made this one a real eye opener! Plus colour on black & white works so well here.
MH: I took Artist in shot on my way to your workshop tour, how could I not take it!!!
If I had not come on this tour I would never have met Neoh.. I did ask could I take a snap of him next to his canvas pictures but that was No! So I took the hand that paints instead!
SSAT: the Workshop challenge awards a bonus point for artist in shot without pissing them off! Mitch’s encounter suggests our guidance for dealing with this tricky subject proved useful! His photo did include some tell tail evidence that could betray the artist’s true identity, we would describe the photo as a bit “bait”, so we have taken the liberty of doctoring Mitch’s photo to remove the detailed evidence, on the bold assumption that it will be tricky for the feds to lift finger prints off the artist’s hand via what remains;-)
SSAT: That was a wonderful response from Mitch who is a naturally accomplished photographer and we look forward to seeing more pics from Mitch in future via his blog.

Shoreditch Street Art Tours took its Street Art Photography Workshop to Hackney Wicked Art Festival with a specially customised version of the workshop featuring Hackney Wick Street Art. A large group of over 30 keen street art voyeurs joined in but fear not if you missed out on this one, the next Shoreditch Street Art Photography Workshop is scheduled for 11am next Sunday, 25th Aug, back in its usual spot in Shoreditch. The slide show screen was projected on a screen about the size of half a tennis court – wow! A dedicated group of visitors to Hackney Wicked then took advantage of the arts and crafts stalls in Queens Yard to photograph lots of crowd scenes.
Among the new pieces spotted on the tour were some tribal faces by 616, including a painted fridge with a hidden 616 inside, and very hard to spot small fish mounted on a wire and most notably on a large sofa he dropped off that morning which proved very popular for photo opportunities. Other finds and great photographic opportunities included some beautiful paste-ups by artist unknown, a new piece of pointillist street art by Jimmy C and a classic pair of Sweet Toof gnashers featuring a gold tooth.
Fears that the street art in Hackney Wick would be too widely distributed and less varied than the Shoreditch offering proved unfounded and the feedback from the visitors was gratifying as always. We look forward to seeing more stunning photos from workshop participants and repeating next year if the Hackney Wicked guys will have us back.
Visitor’s on Shoreditch Street Art Tours’ walks have been unanimously awestruck by the beautiful compositions and virtuoso spraying technique of Shok-1, which has been a semi permanent feature for the past 14 months in a corner of a hidden off street spot.
Shok-1’s paintings beguile with iridescent rainbow coloured bone like structures reminiscent of X-Ray images, popping off a solid black background. The most recent seen this week is the 10th in the series and consisted of 9 poignant glowing crosses in a graveyard, perhaps indicating the final resting place of the previous 9 versions of Shok-1’s X Ray rainbow series.
The bones eerily echo previous uses of a large portion of nearby Spitalfields as the City Of London burial grounds and indeed just beyond the wall Shok has painted is the graveyard attached to Christchurch Spitalfields.
Fear not though, for at the time of writing there is at least one other classic Shok-1 street art painting which Shoreditch Street Art Tours takes in and hopefully we will see more in the area in the not too distant future.
