Sticker Art In Shoreditch

Sometimes you are just wandering around taking snaps of street art, it’s all bit random when click/click/click- out of nowhere a theme emerges. So it was this weekend when three consecutive lampposts yielded stickers that caught my eye.

I just love this manic cat surfing a pizza based board by the legend that is Bob Motown.

Neonita’s painted monsters have been making an impact since I first saw them on the side of The Foundry in early 2010, and just a few days later I bumped into her when we both appeared on a panel discussion on Resonance FM. I don’t recall seeing a sticker from her before but this one looks stunning.  I was struck by coincidence of composition in those two stickers.

All the way from Brazil, Alex Senna who was in town recently and painted the old Foundry Building dropped this sticker.

Remember folks, stickers are art and this trio reinforces the message!

PS – just a couple of hours after writing that I don’t recall seeing a sticker by Neonita before, I found a second sticker, this time in a very attractive green hue and on a lovely ripped and torn background.

Sell Out’s Doggedly Inventive Installation in Shoreditch

Yesterday afternoon the Shoreditch Street Art Tour found plenty of evidence that the Street art provocateur Sell Out had been out conjuring up new butterfly installations.  The centrepiece of his latest installation isn’t actually a butterfly, it’s a multi coloured manically slobbering canine who is doggedly (boom boom) careering around on a scooter trailing a slipstream of butterflies in its wake.

This isn’t the first time that the presence of this motorbike has inspired creative clandestine sculpture making:

The tour also found that further up Brick Lane Sell Out had been active creating a beer swilling fixie riding skinny trousers wearing Shoreditch hipster out of a notice board on a wall.

Brick Lane – great place for a drink

Hats off to an artist who works without permission in daylight, accepts members of public will collect souvenirs from his art and who yesterday happily signed butterflies for some of the younger members of the tour group!

Street Artist’s “yes to no” on Scotland leaving Shoreditch

Bang on time, Shoreditch’s street art now incorporates a political piece referring to today’s crucial “Thanks for all the help but we can make our own mess” Yes or No referendum in Scotland. At least, the caption, a pun based on the “och aye tha noo” Scottish cliché seems to be saying “yes to the no”.

Channelling New York native Mel Gibson, street artist T.Wat casts Alex Salmond, leader of the Scottish Nationalists Party as Braveheart.  Scotland has until 10pm tonight to cast its vote!

In doing so, there seems to have been a little street art politics coming into play. Exactly a week ago, Syd cleaned up the mess of stencils and fly posters and layers of tags and torn paper when he created this musician:

Syd maybe Shoreditch’s Pied Piper but “I didn’t paint this wall for you” suggests a little discord playing out under the public gaze but both artists showed respect for the sculptural tile by Dr Cream and floppy discs by Fezwitch.

Street Art: Shoreditch, London, The World!

Caitlin Kiernan and those nice people at Yahoo have done a guide to the World’s top street art locations.  It’s not actually a “ranking” as such but naturally, Shoreditch comes first 😉

London!

As the article points out, among the guys who have a lot to do with the emergence of modern street art in London are Banksy and D*Face

Remember these aren’t the only places you find super street art but its a great start.

New Nathan Bowen Shutter In Shoreditch

Street Artist Nathan Bowen was on the streets of Shoreditch this afternoon painting in a location which has seen a few high profile murals from him in the past. This time, his trademark builders and soldiers are off on a fishing trip.

Starting with a whitewash background, Nathan set to work with marker pens in a fast and furious style which echoes in the terse appearance of his figures .

The fish is a change for Nathan, it has lovely colours in its scales and fins but it looks like the fishermen are going to get a surprise when they land this monster.

Nathan kindly allowed the Shoreditch Street Art Tour to watch him in action and take some picies. It was a particular meaningful moment for one of our Californian guests (not pictured!) who had been to the fortnightly Sclater Street Stalls last Saturday and bought a small piece of art by Nathan Bowen, that piece now will certainly become a bit more special.

Nathan is no stranger to this spot, we found him painting there back in 2012.

Nathan often allows his figures to interact in a dialogue with existing art, in 2012 he amused us when Australian artist Lush painted a split unicorn over a Bowen composition on this spot, Nathan responded by adding some furious characters riding the unicorn.

So, yesterday we wrote about the Spanish artist Pez who painted his “happy fish”, today we have Nathan Bowen’s characters out for a day of fishing, what’s next, is Columbian street artist Stinkfish in town?

Spanish street artist Pez new art in Shoreditch

Spanish street artist Pez is a real charmer of the old school and he is bringing his colourful, friendly fish to the streets of London.   We had the pleasure bumping into him again last night as he started to map out his latest wall in Shoreditch, the finished article in all its glory is at the top of this post.  We also recently found this little bundle of fun just off Brick Lane.

He has a show opening in London this week at the London Westbank gallery, a cool non white cubed gallery in the Notting Hill area (address below) which will be well worth checking out.

Having made many friends over the 15 years of his smiling fish campaign Pez is celebrating his life among friends by creating a series of collaborations with some of the greatest from London and abroad.

Adnate Does London Street Art Tribute To Robbo

Last night I read an interesting interview with spraycan photo-realist artist Adnate from Melbourne in the newly released issue 27 of scene zine Very Nearly Almost. This afternoon as I drifted around on my bike with my camera to my eye, I came across a brand new tribute to London’s late graffiti legend Robbo.   The signature and the style both read Adnate.

Robbo by Adnate

Bizarre coincidence or what? VNA’s transcript style interview ends with the question “What’s next?” to which Adnate answers “The world”. I suppose you might as well include Shoreditch!

The picture reproduced by Adnate is a famous image of Robbo and it has already featured in several Robbo tributes.

In case you have missed the whole Robbo/Banksy story, you can find out about their epic feud starting here, and the graffiti community’s memorial tributes to the legend Robbo can be found here.

VNA Issue 27 features Aryz as cover artist and includes the above mentioned Adnate interview, a rifle through the memory chest with Will Barras and discussion with Broken Fingaz, the Israeli crew who have been causing controversy playing fast and loose with the obscenity laws here in London (we do have some don’t we?) . Full details on the contents and where to obtain your copy are here.

Despite being an semi-insider (VNA has featured my photos for years) I still get confuzzled with the different edition details, so here are the “standard” Aryz cover (the orangey one) photographed alongside the silk screenprinted special edition Aryz cover (greeny).
