Mustafa Hulusi: Flyposter Art

Over the past Summer some guests on the Shoreditch Street Art Tour were introduced to an unusual interaction between street art and flyposting. The artist Mustafa Hulusi turned illegal adverts on walls into art by declaring them “A Retrospective of Flyposting”.

Mustafa Hulusi – Flyposting Retrospective

This was clever and amusing.   This month, Mustafa Hulusi has an exhibition in a space in the East End called “Flyposting”, a collection of art imagery and signage which Hulusi has put up on street walls since 1998.

Since I first became aware of Hulusi in 2008 when he participated in a panel talk it has been a pleasure to find and photograph Hulusi’s art on the streets, always paste ups and always the same size as standard flyposting formats.

There is a much deeper consideration of Mustapha Hulusi’s work and loads more photos from the past, from the recent street campaign and from the exhibition on another blog which I write on here

Do hurry, the exhibition only runs until the 30th of the month.

Caution Clet Abraham Overhead

A new haul of Clet Abraham traffic sign stickers has appeared overnight on Brick Lane. Clet Abraham is always a favourite on the street art tour with a number of his stickers dating from 2013 surviving.   Clet Abraham’s stickers have appeared on previous visits in many parts of London including Shoreditch (of course), Soho, Putney and even that well known street art hotspot Belgravia.

This set of 8 stickers were all spotted close to the location of Moniker Art Fair, the urban art satellite fair taking place this weekend as part of London’s art week. I have seen only one of this set before in London, it’s always a delight to find a new clutch from this talented street artist.

Clet Abraham has work on the Graffik Gallery stand at Moniker Art Fair, details of which were mentioned in a blog post a couple of days ago.

Graffik Gallery have announced today what they curiously describe as an official party to take place at Graffik’s premises in Portobello Road on Saturday 17th October, 7pm – 11pm. No prizes for guessing where Clet Abraham might be this evening adding his humorous intervention to traffic signs.

Moniker Art Fair 2015

Mid October traditionally sees the art world descend on London drawn by a crazy whirlwind of art fairs, gallery shows, events and parties. Particularly the parties. Moniker Art Fair is the one fair worth going to see for fans of street art and urban art, it takes place in the Old Truman Brewery, E1 6QL, just off Brick Lane in Shoreditch.

This will be the 6th Moniker Art Fair and the third in its larger OTB home after 3 years at Village Underground. In addition to galleries Moniker has a full programme of events including live mural painting by Inkie, Kid Acne and Bom.K from the legendary French street art crew DMV, screen printing from Jealous Prints, talk panels (no – really!) , music, beer and grub. More details on the Moniker website.

Bom.K paints in Eli’s Yard, Shoreditch on Friday but has got off to a flying start demonstrating his virtuoso spraycan skills with a mural on Pedley St, both these places often feature on the Shoreditch Street Art Tour depending on what route we take. Bom.k’s work can be seen on the MYA stand at Moniker and based on previous Bom.K work seen in the capital it is sure to be stunning.

Artists expected to be featured on the galleries include Ryan Callanan (RYCA) on TAG Fine Arts, and Graffik Gallery from Portobello Rd features the ever popular French artist Clet Abraham who is truly prolific with his outdoor traffic sign subversions. London Westbank features new work by K-Guy (as indeed does Shoreditch Street Art Tours from time to time!) and Inkie and also promises to have older pieces by Banksy from the second hand market. Lauren Baker (glass mosaic street art – yes!) has something in common with Banksy, both have works being shown on two Moniker stands!

Particularly exciting is the news that Kallenabch Gallery is showing work by New York’s finest French import WK Interact.

Hawkins and Blue feature Pegasus and Bambi, two stylistically overlapping London stencilists. Bambi’s Michael Brown stencilled piece on Rivington Street will be familiar to tour guests, just don’t expect a personal appearance from Bambi at the fair!

One gallery choosing to use its name to highlight the conceptual conflict between street art  and its cousin gallery art is 44309 Street//Art Gallery. No struggle over its quality line up of featured artists which includes Blek Le Rat (French stencillist), Alice Pasquani, MadC and Telmo and Miel, whose Pedley St mural has just been painted over by Bom.K this week. We probably won’t see retaliatory lining out between gallerists at Moniker!

Bristol stencilist Nick Walker has works in an installation curated by Moniker Arts Projects and exhibited on the walls of the pop up Mexican cantina Art of Patron, the blurb tempts us with the following: “Walker’s sophisticated and highly intricate works are the perfect accompaniment to the carefully curated food and drink menu.”  Until there is photographic proof I won’t believe anyone can get through a whole Nick Walker canvas in one go.

If you fancy a little blind punt, there is the “Art On A Postcard” fundraiser for Hepatitis C Trust featuring 200 works of art and 200 tickets to be sold at £50 so every ticket gets a piece of art, with the possibility of snagging a post card from Gilbert and George, Matt Small, Inkie, Shuby, Eelus, Ashes 57 to name but a few. Everyone a winner!

Street Art Goes Over Our Heads

Street art should never go over our heads though great examples of street art are often literally looking down on us. Street art environmentalist and master craftsman Jonesy has been adding a few wonderful bronze castings on top of lampposts around Shoreditch.

The first one I spotted by complete chance a couple of weeks ago caused me to spend some time wander about with my eyes cast upwards looking for more, which revealed other artists working over our heads!

Finding Free Art

New art and free art made this day another exciting day for guests of Shoreditch Street Art Tours.

Shoreditch, London, Street art, found art, free art, Sean Worrall

Three guests went home as proud owners of new art by Sean Worrall, left as”Free art” on the streets of Shoreditch. In case you don’t know, some street artists like to leave art which people can find and collect, usually there is a message written on the back inviting the finder to help themselves to the art which is deliberatelyremovable, not permanently attached to the wall.

Shoreditch, London, Street art, found art, free art, Sean Worrall,

Sean Worrall has a #365artdrops (opens in a new page) project to leave 365 pieces of Free Art on the street usually painted on materials found on the streets then returned to the streets.  Guests have in the past found pieces of Sean’s work as reported HERE .

This was day 2 of life on the street for an installation piece by street artist Sell Out. Sell Out’s image, a framed collage, reproduces the cockerel familiar to millions of us from breakfast cornflakes packets. Written in the frame is the repeated refrain “I hate cereal”. Sell Out is referencing the protest last Saturday night against gentrification in the area which resulted in the Cereal Killers café on Brick Lane being defaced with paint. You decide how you interpret Sell Out’s take on that event! Suffice to say, a number of Sell Out’s customary paper butterflies were flying out of the frame of the image, originally blu-tacked (is that a verb?) to the wall but this afternoon lying on the floor (photo below taken yesterday morning) and some guests helped themselves to those butterflies as Sell Out has always intended in the past.
