Moniker Art Fair 2018

Here are a few of the highlights from the 2018 Moniker Art Fair which has been a must visit urban art adventure for fans of street art.   Three key aspects have been gallery displays of urban art, mainly art by street artists which isn’t on the street; installations and a day of presentations and talks about theory and practice of street art.  Some of stands are gallery presentations, some are specific to individual artists.

Last year entry was through a mocked up trackside installation, this year French street artists Lex and Sowat have creative an immersive maze of plastic material, light and sound.

Gallery highlight was probably BSMT Space presenting work by Sweet Toof, A.CE and Skeleton Cardboard topped off by stunning video displays of the provocative political stunts of the Rocco Brothers.

Vermibus was one of the stars of the 2012 edition of Moniker, the Vermibus stand this year makes a feature of the feline beauty of Kate Moss.

Skewville is over from New York stamping YO on sheets of paper while displaying duplex prints which look dramatically different when viewed through a red lens or a blue lens.

The installational part of the Moniker Art Fair was superb, getting close to the art quality and production values of the Lazarades curated shows in the Leake Street Tunnels of yesteryear.   A couple of standouts among the installations were the cut metal shadow art of Dan Rawlings and the beautiful work of Hera, one of the Frankfurt Herakut duo.

Moniker Art Fair 2015

Mid October traditionally sees the art world descend on London drawn by a crazy whirlwind of art fairs, gallery shows, events and parties. Particularly the parties. Moniker Art Fair is the one fair worth going to see for fans of street art and urban art, it takes place in the Old Truman Brewery, E1 6QL, just off Brick Lane in Shoreditch.

This will be the 6th Moniker Art Fair and the third in its larger OTB home after 3 years at Village Underground. In addition to galleries Moniker has a full programme of events including live mural painting by Inkie, Kid Acne and Bom.K from the legendary French street art crew DMV, screen printing from Jealous Prints, talk panels (no – really!) , music, beer and grub. More details on the Moniker website.

Bom.K paints in Eli’s Yard, Shoreditch on Friday but has got off to a flying start demonstrating his virtuoso spraycan skills with a mural on Pedley St, both these places often feature on the Shoreditch Street Art Tour depending on what route we take. Bom.k’s work can be seen on the MYA stand at Moniker and based on previous Bom.K work seen in the capital it is sure to be stunning.

Artists expected to be featured on the galleries include Ryan Callanan (RYCA) on TAG Fine Arts, and Graffik Gallery from Portobello Rd features the ever popular French artist Clet Abraham who is truly prolific with his outdoor traffic sign subversions. London Westbank features new work by K-Guy (as indeed does Shoreditch Street Art Tours from time to time!) and Inkie and also promises to have older pieces by Banksy from the second hand market. Lauren Baker (glass mosaic street art – yes!) has something in common with Banksy, both have works being shown on two Moniker stands!

Particularly exciting is the news that Kallenabch Gallery is showing work by New York’s finest French import WK Interact.

Hawkins and Blue feature Pegasus and Bambi, two stylistically overlapping London stencilists. Bambi’s Michael Brown stencilled piece on Rivington Street will be familiar to tour guests, just don’t expect a personal appearance from Bambi at the fair!

One gallery choosing to use its name to highlight the conceptual conflict between street art  and its cousin gallery art is 44309 Street//Art Gallery. No struggle over its quality line up of featured artists which includes Blek Le Rat (French stencillist), Alice Pasquani, MadC and Telmo and Miel, whose Pedley St mural has just been painted over by Bom.K this week. We probably won’t see retaliatory lining out between gallerists at Moniker!

Bristol stencilist Nick Walker has works in an installation curated by Moniker Arts Projects and exhibited on the walls of the pop up Mexican cantina Art of Patron, the blurb tempts us with the following: “Walker’s sophisticated and highly intricate works are the perfect accompaniment to the carefully curated food and drink menu.”  Until there is photographic proof I won’t believe anyone can get through a whole Nick Walker canvas in one go.

If you fancy a little blind punt, there is the “Art On A Postcard” fundraiser for Hepatitis C Trust featuring 200 works of art and 200 tickets to be sold at £50 so every ticket gets a piece of art, with the possibility of snagging a post card from Gilbert and George, Matt Small, Inkie, Shuby, Eelus, Ashes 57 to name but a few. Everyone a winner!
