Shoreditch Street Art Face Off – Gregos is back!

French street artist Gregos was spotted back in Shoreditch this weekend in the company of Nemi UHU, the fish tile creator. This first came to our attention with the surprise finding of a fat faced portrait sculpture bursting through a wall on Brick Lane last Friday.

Gregos first put his work up in London last February when he and a group of 10 other street artists, all friends of C215, came to London to launch “Vitry Ville Street Art: L’aventure continue”, a new book celebrating the art in C215’s home town. He put up 50 self portrait sculptures of varying sizes. There are seven basic portrait castings of Gregos’ own face in a variety of poses, each installation is decorated according to mood, location and whim.

The one we saw most of last year was rudely poking its tongue out at the English, that may have been just a happy accident from the French artist’s point of view as this sculpture was created in 2006 when Nicolas Sarkozy was President of France. Gregos was most definitely not a supporter and the rude tongue portrait was designed as a message and personal insult from Gregos to Sarkozy.

Oi, Sarkozy!

Gregos’ ambition is to put up another 50 sculptures on this visit so there should be plenty of sculpture spotting opportunities around Shoreditch and Camden where he has been know to visit so far.  On Sunday, Gregos installed and painted a new sculpture in Shoreditch providing passersby with a grand spectator sport. Even a cruise-by from the police didn’t stop him.

French Street Artist Alex Trema Free Art Found!

French street artist Alex Trema is in London placing pieces of free art on the streets as part of a project he dubs “Take me”.  Today Shoreditch Street Art Tours’ guests came across a piece of Alex’s art packaged up on the streets and they did exactly that, they took it!

Alex conceived his project while in New York in late Spring of 2013 and has placed free art in Paris, Marseille, Napoli, Lille, Milan and now London!   The London version consists of an image of the late West London icon Joe Strummer, singer with The Clash.

Ours now!

Alex likes to see the public becoming a part of his project with their participation in photos of them with the art on the streets, so in his terms our guests are officially a piece of art, but they knew that anyway!

French Stencil/Screenprint Artist Tian Decorates Streets Of Shoreditch London

Fresh art from the studio of French stencilist Tian has appeared on the streets of London.  Tian’s work first came to our attention as one of the stand out “turn up and spray” un-invited artists at Banksy’s Cans Festival in 2008.  We met when Tian came on his regular visits to London and in 2010 I wrote a profile of this artist which appeared in Issue 13 of Very Nearly Almost street art zine.

Tian enjoys working with figures, notably boxers and actresses and is also a keen fan of Japanese Shungas which are clearly an influence on some of the erotically charged work he has put up in Shoreditch.  We photographed 19 separate new pieces of work this afternoon, Tian has clearly been very very busy!
