London International Pasteup Festival

The third London International Pasteup Festival team tactically arranged the new art submitted for the festival around existing art. Some of that existing art was well weathered from LIPF2, the second London International Pasteup Festival.

All you have to do is compare the London International Pasteup Festival 2023 v. 2022 images above and count how many different paste ups survived the 11 month and 6 days between LIPF2 and LIPF3. While you’re at it, write down the names of as many of the artists whose worked survived from LIPF2 to LIPF 3 as you can. Then:

The winner will be the person who meets conditions 1, 2 and 3 above and gets closest to the number of surviving pieces of art the judges count.

In the event of a tie on estimates of the number of surviving pieces, the entry correctly identifying the most artists of enduring art pieces will be the winner.

If that does not produce a clear winner the winner will be determined by a draw.

Street Art has many forms, different techniques have evolved to suit different artistic strategies and different environments. Stencilism is most closely associated with street art’s emergence in the early to mid 2000s thanks mainly to Banksy and the many artists he influenced and inspired. Muralism, on surfaces ranging from building site hoardings to massive end gable walls has come to dominate the public’s awareness of street art over the past ten years. Street art is most profound as an outlet for the unsung, the outsider, the radical and the romantic and the most convenient format for unauthorised street art is the paste up – images on paper glued to external surfaces.

On the heels of London’s first Mural Festival last year, 2021 brings The London International Paste Up Festival. 100s of pasteup street art pieces over 6 locations featuring many artists seen in London for the first time and many old favourites.

The formal opening night takes place this Thursday 4^th November at The Hoxton Gallery and the festival runs until Sunday the 7^th. On Sunday I will be leading a free tour of the paste up locations and the art will remain visible for viewing for varying lengths of time depending on the location.
